One suggestion which seemed worth trying was to scatter chillies around the seedlings. I guess the taste of the chillies is supposed to deter the birds.
As you can see, I scattered some dried chilli flakes around my seedlings today and will wait and see whether the flakes are an effective deterrent. I'll keep you posted.
