Tuscana.. un'altra [once more]

For someone who has been bitten by the travel bug, am one of those who enjoys visiting new places everything I plan a trip. But since I was not really travelling, but just revisiting a familiar cuisine, I was ok to head back to Tuscana in Wallace Garden. This is a slightly smaller place when compared to the one on Chamiers Road.

I have been here quite a number of times, sometimes with friends and other times for a meeting. This is the restaurant that introduced me to thin crust pizzas and panna cotta. From then on, I have had these dishes numerous times and quite like them.

Another thing that was going to be different about tonight was that there was a new lady in the house, Neha had left and Priyanka was in her place. She wanted to meet the gang and introduce us to some of the new dishes that had found its place on the menu.

We were seated in the room near the pizza oven, which had quite a rustic interior. The walls were covered with paintings made by specially abled people and were up for sale. And then suddenly the  place was pitch dark, power had gone. But luckily restored in a few minutes! By then all had arrived and finally the evening was on its way. The 1st to arrive was an appetizer of sorts- a plate with crisp pizza base served alongside a tomato dip and some cut veggies. We were all quite hungry and the plates were polished within moinutes. Next up arrived the hot juicy garlic bread, it was called Baguette all’Aglio and was oozing with butter and garlic.  We had quite a few of these, which shows how hungry we all were.

Thankfully, there came along plates of fresh salads- Insalata Caprese and Insalata Toscana. the1st was a salad that we all loved- fresh slices of mozerella cheese, tomato, basil, and crisp chips. The other salad was a total contrast, it had heaps of lettuce, olives, crunchy pears, cheese and a splash of Chives.

As the conversation flowed, we went through one more round of black out and then came the pizzas. There were quite a few pizzas, one with a variety of veggies- colour capsicums & onion, then came the Chilli pizza which I felt was quite spicy [ couldnt even finish the 1 tiny slice I cut, the heat of jalepenos was a killer in this] and I have lost count of how many glasses of water I gulped down. Phew...

Along came the pastas, showing off their flavours and hogging the limelight.. First up was the Alla Norma (Gluten Free penne).. Next up, put your hands together for the show stopped, the winner of the evening- Aglio Aromatizzata, fettuccine that was filled with oomph. What a way to end the meal.

Oh wait, i see something squarish small arriving on a plate. What is it? it is a chocolate cake? or was it a tiramisu.. Yes, it is a tiramisu, served alongside some gooey custard it was heaven. Unfortunately I cant say the same about its friend, the expresso panna cotta- dint like it too much, and the texture was tad weird as well, we literally had to cut through it to take a bite.

And with that ladies and gentlemen we shall draw the curtains on yet another evening.. Was it good? Was it bad? well, it was definitely somber, the entire evening was missing the usual buzz and energy.. wonder why!!

Tuscana is a place you to go for the thin crust pizzas and interesting salads.

Summer Lunch at Sandy's

One of those days when impromptu plans were made and I met a friend of mine for lunch. Neither of us were really hungry, it was proving to be a long day and added it was the sweltering summer sun. After a few messages we decided to meet at Sandy's, wallace garden. Walked in, found a table for 2 near the counter and began catching up. We ordered drinks, she a ginger ale and I went for a Lychee fizz. Hers arrived in a can, while mine was served in a beaker with a pink straw. For someone who hates the sight of pink colour, i enjoyed every sip of this drink, maybe 'cos i love lychee.

For lunch, we chose light food- I ordered for the Tabouleh salad while she chose the Falafel wrap. The place was empty when we walked in, but within minutes it was packed. There were groups of 2-6 filling the tables. A family of 4 arrived, with a little boy and a girl who insisted on sitting in the center, on the bar stool type seating. They had to be helped up by their parents and animatedly began pointing to things on the shelf and talking.

And there came our food. Mine looked green and inviting, hers neatly wrapped up in butter paper served alongside a cucumber dip and potato wedges. My salad was fresh, rich and filled with flavour, loved it.

We skipped dessert and headed home. Now that is what i call Lunch- light and yet refreshing. Sandy's never fails to please.. :-))

If you are wondering where to go for a quick lunch or some yumm desserts, this is whre you should go. They have quite a variety of food and desserts that will leave you licking the plate clean.. Not only is the food good, but service is also top notch. The staff leave you alone, without constantly coming over asking if you need anything or if all is good....

Marrybrown, Ispahani Center, Chennai

Ispahani center, a place that i wish existed during my college days. A place that had quite a few interesting stoes and coffee shops, a place that was among the 1st mall to enter the city, a place where i used to work out. Today, it is a mall, rather so called mall that has quite a few eat outs and a few shops, but is pretty empty most of the time. Looks like Express Avenue has taken over, it is now the new honeycomb attracting all the bees...

As decided, I arrived at Ispahani center before 7.30pm only to see the others already there, well almost all of them. There were a few new faces, but familiar names and we said Hi hello and connected. Soon, the table was full and one of the staff brought over a hand written menu. It contained a list of items that they had on their menu, most of which were new. He was going to give us a taste of as many as possible. For once, i noticed the number of Vegetarian items beat the Non veg ones hands down. Whoopie.. [ya ya, small pleasures]

So, what did i like the most of the stuff i tasted?

Jigger Fries - these are french fries with a difference- there are two flavours- Mexican spice and Sour cream & onion. Reminded me of the popcorn in Sathyam cinemas where you can add flavours to the popcorn. Only suggestion was to not dunk so much of the spice in the fries and maybe to add this to some of their other dishes as well.

Chilli cheese poppers- These were like mini bombs, mini chilli cheese fried starters that were quite good. Served alongside a tangy spicy mayo sauce, they were quite yummy

Xtreme burger- Yep, I had a burger after what seemed like ages. This was a simple veggie burger with corn and black pepper [the pepper hits you on the 1st bite and it was different, the patty had a nice crunchy exterior and the bun was also nice & soft]. The burger was easy to eat, it dint have mayo oozing out of the sides or lettuce/onions slipping out as you struggle to take a bite :D

Mango Shake- This was quite thick and quite nice, refreshing. It was made with mango puree and vanilla ice cream blended together. They have now introduced not one or two but 6 flavours in this :-)

Few other dishes that were served up for us veggies were,

Veg Chilli poppers- these were little nuggets made with veggies and chilli flakes, served with basic mayo sauce - was quite bland, couldnt feel the heat of the chilli flakes

Smileys- umm, the usual smileys, McCain?

Cottage cheese burger - forgot the name, it was ok, since we were full, I brought it home and felt the patty was mushy and bland.

What? you are bored of reading all the veg dishes? well, you have to wait your turn. For those on the other side of the fence, that is, the non veg eaters, they got quite a few options, but most felt the dishes all tasted similar, and were quite bland... What did they gobble up?

Chicken Poppers
Buffalo wings
Chicken lollypop
A tub of what looked like fried chicken drumstick/wings and
Hottop burger
anything else? you should check Divyan's blog post

No desserts? Damn, nothing gets past you eh!! Well, we did get 2 different desserts, but unfortunately they were no great shakes.

There was the jello with ice cream and Brownie with ice cream. The former was ok, esp since i like jello but the Brownie was just weird- it was hard, dry and tasted like Threptin biscuits. I did see a spoon break and another little piece fly towards a customer... Looks like they need to relook at the recipe or look at an alternative.

Overall rating- 2.5/5
Will i go back again- Not really, not unless there is a kid or someone who demands a burger or french fries when am wandering around Ispahani or near a Marrybrown....

The Dessert Studio, Chennai

The sweetness of chocolate, tartness of strawberry and the added flavour of sweet cream was what i felt in my mouth with the 1st bite of the crepe. I was at Dessert Studio, the newly opened place in Khader Nawaz Khan road [ it is in the same campus as Espirit, tucked away on the 1st floor, with the entrance on the side]

You could miss this place  if you dont know of it or dont notice the name board in the front. Completely white, the burst of colour on the ceiling is such a feast for the eyes. Simple decor, few white tables with cute egg kinda designer chairs, and a self service counter. That is all you find here. If you are the observant kind like yours truly, as you open the main door, you will notice the wall with three categories mentioned on it-  Choco Berries (UAE), Yogo-D-Lite (Italy) and Shake-a-Take (UK),- three different banners, three times the number of options to choose from.

Founded by Food Spreads Pvt Ltd’s Jinshad Haziy, Rishdin Nasir and Anas Nasir, the Dessert Studio offers quite a variety of Shakes, Yoghurt Ice creams [which came in 3 sizes] and Bites [Crepes, waffles and desserts- Apple walnut crumble and such...one that was in their display reminded me of Theobrama]. The interesting thing is each of the three banners have a seperate billing counter, good or bad? Both i guess. It is a bit cumbersome if you want to place an order that has items from across their menu. Imagine hopping from one counter to the other, you will be tired and frustrated. Luckily, me and my friend headed towards the Choco Berries section. We chose the Strawberry Belgian Chocolate Crepe and waited a few minutes before it was ready.

I love Strawberries, i like chocolate and i love Crepes, so this was just perfect. The crepe was thin and light, filled with rich chocolate [ which was not too sweet]. I just wished it was  bigger and lasted longer than 10 bites. :-) [That is just greedy me].

Friend wanted to take something home for her kids, and since they loved ice cream, she chose Strawberry Yoghurt ice cream only to be told they dont parcel them [as the ice cream melts and taste is lost]. She then settled for Milkshakes, Kit Kat milkshake since her kids liked the chocolate the most.

It is a nice place, no doubt, with a limited menu, but something they seem to have mastered. I hear they also plan on launching a brunch soon, just hope they dont dilute the menu and start offering everything under the sun and become one of those places we see around every corner.

Ambiance: 7/10
Service: Self service [cant reallly rate it.. but polite staff who are ready to help]
Price: 5/10 [ The Crepe we ordered was Rs170 not incl tax, the shakes i think were Rs80]
Overall Rating : 6/10 [but nothing new, nothing that makes you go WOW]

Veekes and Thomas, Chennai

There is a new eat out in Town, yes, one more, but this one seems promising. Why? It is pure Veg, a chain that has been quite successful in Bangalore, located in Nungambakkam, off Haddows Road and menu is simple, the icing on the cake- it is very reasonably priced!

And the decision was made. When a friend's friend- SR was in town and asked if we could meet up, after a few messages, i asked if we could do lunch at Veekes & Thomas ?!

We landed there at 1pm, and on opening the door to the restaurant found it hot and stuffy. One the staff apologized and told us they were facing power issues. We then decided to sit outside, and luckily it wasnt too hot.

Since we were meeting for the first time, we spent nearly an hour catching up, swapping stories, sharing work experiences and of course talking about the mutual friend...
It was nearly 2pm when we thought we should get down to ordering Lunch...

They had about 3 soups and it mentioned "served in Chai glass" which is what got me curious.. The Basil & Tomato soup was not available and so we settled for the French Onion soup [i'd recently watched the Masterchef Masterclass episode where Gary made the French Onion soup and my oh my, it looked divine]

The other day when i had been here, few friends were just winding up. One of them in particular mentioned that the Brocolli Corn Cheese Starter was delightful. And well, yes, i had to try it. It was crisp with a nice bite to it and filled with flavour- served with a tangy sauce.

For the main dishes, i chose the Ratatouille [for some reason, the dish always brings the movie to my mind and i wonder if the dish is going to resemble a rat or come with a toon picture... lol]. I enjoyed the Ratatouille, but the rice had a bit of a bite, i wonder if that is how it is supposed to be or if this is a different kind of rice....

While my friend chose the Penne with Vegetables [which was a bit bland so we added chilli flakes and herbs to it and then  it sang like a tweety bird... :-)]

The food was really good, simple. We were stuffed and so passed up on Desserts. But the most amazing part was when the bill arrived- this meal for 2 was Rs538/- .. What a steal....

We lingered on for another half hour yakking away before parting ways. It was one good happy lunch! Will i go back here? You Betcha!

Ambiance- 7/10 [inside is nice, with all the music posters on the wall and pictures of food etc]
Price- 9/10
Service- 8/10 [ Umm, there were times when we couldnt quite understand what the waiter was telling us. Guess its their accent]
Overall Rating -8.5/10

Fresca Pizzaria by Sandy's, KNK Road

Do you want to get a sneak peek into something nobody has seen/experienced till date? That is all it takes for my interest to get piqued and antenna to go up .. So, when i got a text asking if i would like to be a part of the 1st group of people who were going to experience the "yet to be opened" Fresca Pizzeria by Sandy, i jumped right in. Yes, this is same Sandesh Reddy who brought in Sandy's Chocolate Laboratory and Maya to our city... Actually, Fresca is what you will find if you go looking for Maya Restaurant [which is moving to a different location].

A Four Course Neapolitan meal with a price tag of Rs1000/- and let me tell you, it was well worth the money, infact it was a steal. This was part of Chennai Food Guide Diner's club initiative!!

Trivia on Neopolitan Cuisine [a la Wikipedia]
Neapolitan cuisine has ancient historical roots that date back to the Greco-Roman period, which was enriched over the centuries by the influence of the different cultures that controlled Naples and its kingdoms, such as that of Aragon and France. The contributions and fantasy of the Neapolitan people has been extremely important in further developing an autonomous culinary culture.
Since Naples was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples, its cuisine took much from the culinary traditions of all the Campania region, reaching a balance between dishes based on rural ingredients (pasta, vegetables, cheese) and seafood dishes (fish, crustaceans, mollusks). A vast variety of recipes is influenced by the local aristocratic cuisine, like timballi and the sartù di riso, pasta or rice dishes with very elaborate preparation, while the dishes coming from the popular traditions contain poor but nutritionally healthy ingredients, like pasta e fagioli (pasta with beans) and other pasta dishes with vegetables.

I landed at the venue at 7.45, spotted Shadir on the phone, and went ahead to the basement looking for the others. The place looked pretty much the same as it did when Maya was around, Sandesh mentioned he was getting an artist who would do a mural/art on the ceiling and some of the paintings on the wall would be replaced. We were offered the largest table in the restaurant, that could seat 15.

Dark interiors, Deep red sofas and chairs, White cutlery with Black napkins, a menu sheet rolled up with a pretty ribbon on each place. Not only this, but after every course, the cutlery was replaced, there was someone refilling our water glasses every few seconds.. All this is what you call Attention to detail and it definitely adds to the impression and experience.

The night began with Sandesh giving us a brief on Neopolitan Cuisine, the fresh ingredients he was using, and the process he went through when finalising the menu, the equipments being used and so on. It was quite fascinating listening to him because for many food is just food, well, you order a pizza, dig into it, and once your hunger is satiated, you are done with the meal. Very few relish the ingredients, want to learn about the process of baking, cooking, reduction, and so on.

Course 1 - Appetizers

from L to R- Carpaccio, Stewed Figs, Appetite Teaser[ smoked Gorgonzella cheese with Poached Pears]
Ajo Blanco and Bruschetta

1. Ajo Blanco[ Soup] -
Stewed green grape, gastrique
It was a divine cold soup, that was so rich in flavours, we were all dumb struck.

2. Carpaccio  Non Veg [Salad]
Rocket, Mustard Mango & Parmesan
Well, the guys looked like they had visited heaven and back on tasting this dish

3. Stewed Figs [Salad]
Boccancini, Roasted Zuccini
This was sinful, i love figs, and when  it had been gently stewed and served with zucchini, cheese and greens, it was a delight

Course 2 - Pasta

From L to R- the menu., Spinach Gnocchi, Fromaggio Ravioli, Smoked Chicken Agnoloti and accompaniment herbs
1. The Fromaggio Ravioli
Wine butter, Pickled Vegetables
Oh my, i got no words to describe this dish. It just melted in my mouth, it was orgasmic [yes, stop gasping already, you will understand what i mean when you taste this] and was again so rich in flavours. there were about 3 different kinds of cheese in it, along with Tomatoes and basil. The Ravioli was cooked to perfection, al dente and this dish was a hit, the plates were whizzing from one end of the table to the other, with people polishing it off.

2. Spinach Gnocchi [Made with Spinach, Potato and Semolina]
Butter milk, Gorgonzola
Soft and simple, this gnocchi was nice. It had subtle flavours, and again a bit of cheese in the sauce.

3. Smoked Chicken Agnolotti - Non Veg
Tomato, Basil, Parmesan
Going by the reactions, am guessing this dish was delicious as well.

Course 3 - Pizze

From L to R: Palate Cleanser [Apple & Lime], Pizza:- Pesto & Artichoke , Margharita,Quattro fromaggi  and finally, the trio of Non veg pizza.

What is a Neapolitan Pizza?
For starts - it is not your regular pizza. The size of a Neapolitan Pizza is around 10-12" ~ about the size of a Frisbee. 1 pizza should fill 1 person. It's a whole pie only, sit down affair. Usually not for a take away/home delivery. Eat if fresh, eat it at table for best results. Your pizza will be soggy as the liquid from the sauce & cheese tend to create a hot, soppy, molten area at the center of the pizza. It takes roughly 2-3 minutes to prepare one Neapolitan Pizza. The pizzas are usually not sliced, will have a charred crust & minimal toppings. Ideally a balance between crust, sauce & cheese. If an Indian were to put in layman terms - it would be an Indian bread (maybe Naan/Roti) with tomato paste, cheese & topping on it!

Veg - Margharita, Pesto & Artichoke, Quattro fromaggi
Each of these were lip smackingly good. I personally loved the Pesto & Artichoke , it was oozing with flavour, the crust was thin but not biscuitish, and there was cheese, but nont overpowering.

Non Veg - Grilled Chicken, Pepperoni
These flew like hot cakes.
There were pizzas being served on our table as if there was going to be dearth for food next day on. That is how amazing these pizzas were.

The Palate Cleanser was served next, it was a sort of sorbet made with Apple and Lime, and it was a burst of flavour in the mouth. I could taste the apple more than the lime...  And by now, we all knew this meant Dessert was next... ta ta ta daa ...

Course 4 - Dessert
Top: Bocca Negra and Bottom: Tiramisu

1. Tiramisu
  Nuttela
I've eaten Tiramisu in plenty of places but this was groovy, and as we got to the bottom of the glass, the liquer took over, it was quite strong. It also has mascarpone and savoiardi biscuits and enough tia maria and dark rum mixed with a lavazza espresso that really kicks in with every bite.
2. Bocca Negra
Vanilla Bean Ice cream
I ordered this since i thought Bleh, Tiramisu, been there eaten enough.. :-) I got a plate with a scoop of Vanilla ice cream, and a cup with what looked like a molten lava cake.. Well, it was hot, it was gooey and it was chocolate, not over the top, but just right. I loved it from the first spoonful.
Bharat, who dint eat eggs got what looked like Blueberry tart, couldnt get a picture, but he enjoyed it.
The evening began around 8 and went on till 11pm, and it was quite a fun evening. Good company, amazing food, interesting insights, and well, awesome service. What more could we ask for right? Between every course, Sandesh gave us a bit of insight into the dishes, the style of cooking, the battles he fought to keep the item on the menu and how each day would boast a different menu [well as he said not all ingredients will be available all the time]
None of the pizzas or pastas had All purpose flour or Maida in them, he was using a different kind of flour.. How cool is that? And yes, he was here offering people the chance to break away from perceptions, and try new ingredients and dishes!

P.S: * I did note that most of the lot on the table, though hard core non vegetarians, enjoyed the veg food immensely.

P.P.S: The Pizzaria should be open in a few weeks time! So keep a look out for the "Now Open" banner when you drive into Khader Nawaz Khan road.

Ambiance - 7/10
Service- 8.10
Food - 9/10
Price - 8/10 [A meal for two will cost about Rs1000- Rs1200/- but remember, it also depends on what and how much you order]

5 Senses, Chennai

We walked in towards the lift in this new swanky restaurant 5 Senses on Khader nawaz khan road... A we entered the roof top, we were pleasantly surprised at the spacious interiors and exterior seating and of course the decor. The walls had posters from Hollywood classics. As i admired them, the waiter brought what looked like a huge diary, but which was actually their menu card, rather quite a large menu book. Flipped through the pages, tried to make sense of all that was written under each category and finally gave up.. but the information about the various towns, cuisines present was very interesting.. Wish they gave us a book to take home to read in leisure!!

We ordered a Tapas, that had about 5 little starters, 3 veg and 2 non veg.. They were each sinful and packed with flavour. And then for soup, i ordered a Broccoli soup, which the waiter served in a rather unique fashion. The bowl came with a little cake in the center around which green thick soup was poured. The center was infact a broccoli mouse cake. It was good.. very light!! A friend ordered Mushroom soup that was served with a long slice of toasted bread on a wooden platter, quite funky... The others passed up on soup and went ahead with the main course.

Between us, we ordered a Chicken & Basil pizza[ Senor P added every possible seasoning on it and we managed to get a clear shot of that, but the whole pizza looked divine and the crunchy basil on top was delicious], a chicken salad, I ordered a dish that was an assortment of smoked vegetables, and finally there was the Mousakka... If one could satiate their hunger with just the appearance of the dishes, we would be full to our ears,  then this is where you should head... however, if you are a group of people and try to share the dish, you might feel the portions are too little... The Restaurant prides itself in being a Fine Dining, and so prices are high and portions are lesser than what you are normally used to...

Food did taste good, but apart from the pizza, the portions were fairly ok... Between us, we finished one and a half bottles of wine as well. And did order up a few Apple martinis that another friend had recommended...

Oh, and we werent done yet... We wanted to go all the way and have ourselves one hearty meal. For dessert, we just stuck to Chocolate Canaloni, that was served on a long white plate with a few slices of orange on one side, and two rolls, one hazelnut flavoured and other dark chocolate with rich cholocate filling on the inside.. It was to die for... divine!!

Good conversation, amazing company and good food, all that made the evening quite a memorable one!We were on a high and so the night will remain a fun experience...
