Backyard Harvest: Radishes

Apparently radishes have been cultivated in Europe since pre-Roman times, which says something about the ease with which they are grown and their lasting appeal.

They have the very definite advantage of fast germination.  Indeed the Greek name for radish raphanus means "fast appearing".

I am currently using radishes to add colour to winter salads when not much else is growing in the garden apart from greens.  My husband also enjoys eating them plain and raw.

What have you harvested this week?

Things to Do with Lavender

After my post about the winter-flowering lavender in my garden, Tanya asked for ideas for things to do with lavender.

Here are my suggestions.

The best thing to do with lavender is enjoy its presence in your garden and its scent as you brush past..

If you must cut it back, you could make lavender sachets to scent your drawers and deter moths, or if you're lazy like me you could make lavender socks.  Lavender is also an important component of homemade potpourri.
If you are sure your lavender has not been sprayed you could make lavender tea.

If you are a bath-lover, you could make old-fashioned aromatic bath oil for your bath.

If you like your linen lavender-scented, you could make a bottle of luscious lavender linen water.

If you don't have fresh lavender but like lavender essential oil, you could use it to scent homemade multipurpose cleaner, or use it in an oil burner.

If you are a soap maker you could make a batch of lavender soap.

Some people make lavender scones - but they don't appeal to me very much.  I don't really like the idea of eating lavender.

That's all I can think of.  What else could you do with lavender?

How to Get Rid of Aphids

Wandering around my garden the other day I noticed that the new, late winter buds on my rose bushes are covered in aphids.  It's time to do something about them before they get any worse.

Like most gardeners I detest aphids.  These squishy, sap-sucking little bugs attack plants such as roses, hibiscus, peach and cherry trees and are known to spread plant diseases.  They breed in enormous numbers as soon as the weather begins to warm up.

There are a number of different ways to get rid of aphids:
  • Let natural predators such as ladybirds, hoverflies, lace wings and small birds, do the work for you
  • Use commercial remedies such as Neem oil or Pyrethrum spray
  •  Make your own spray such as garlic spray or white oil
  • Squash them or hose them off
My choice has been to make up a batch of white oil.  Tomorrow I'll start spraying.  Wish me luck!

5 Ways to Recycle Used Coffee Grounds

Many of us love a good cup of coffee, but what to do with the used coffee grounds? Here are some suggestions:

  1. Use as a mulch around acid-loving plants: Acid-loving plants include azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, blue hydrangeas and blueberries.  I have been collecting coffee grinds from our work coffee machine to use around my blueberries, as Adelaide soil tends to be alkaline.
  2. Compost them or use in a worm farm: fairly obvious but true
  3. Bug repellant:  Scatter coffee grounds around near ant nests or around plants easily damaged by snails and slugs to deter the creepy-crawlies.
  4. Natural Dye:  As most of us know, coffee stains when spilt, so use coffee grounds steeped in boiling water as a brown dye for Easter eggs and even clothing.  (First soak the fabric in coffee, air dry it, then wash in cold water to set the dye.)
  5. Fridge deodoriser:  Coffee grounds in a clean, old sock tied at the top can be used to deodorise the fridge, but make sure the grounds are dry or they'll go mouldy.

Summer garland

Olá, queridos amigos!

Hoje as minhas sobrinhas e a filha de uma grande amiga fazem anos. Fiz esta grinalda para enfeitar as festas! Adorei fazê-la e baseei-me num trabalho da autoria da Martha Stewart! :-)

Espero que gostem!

Hello dear friends!

Today is the birthday of my two nieces and also of the daughter of one of my best friends. We are all going to celebrate their birthdays later on. I did this summer garland to colour up the parties! I loved doing the garland, based on a Martha Stewart one! :-)

Hope you like it!
