My Sunny Kitchen Tour

After our last house, a rental, which had a dreary, windowless kitchen, I was very keen to have a window in my next kitchen.  Oh, and plenty of bench space.  Fortunately, this house has both.
I will never underestimate how wonderful it is to be able to daydream out a window when my hands are deep in sudsy water.

Here are some views of our kitchen from a few different angles.
From the family room.

A corner from within the kitchen.

Looking out across the table to the garden.  The family room/informal living room is to the right.

And here are some details.

I haven't bought anything new for this kitchen, so what I am showing is things I already had.  Fortunately, just about everything goes with an off-white kitchen!

Anyhow, here's the windowsill, which has a little blue dish my husband brought back from china, a little bowl with my favourite rose-scented soap, and a blue chook.  The tree outside the window is a lemon tree which I have underplanted with strawberries given to me by a friend.

As you can see, the splashbacks and windowsill are granite as well as the benches. This makes for very easy cleaning!

A little birthday gift from friends who know how much I love to grow things.

This small white bin is used for kitchen scraps which I put in one of our worm farms (we have two).

Finally, some canisters.

I hope you have enjoyed my kitchen tour.  It is participating in Show Us Your Life Friday: Kitchens at Kelly's Korner blog.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Love at first sight

I can't remember where I saw Tamar's creations for the first time. I can only tell you that her Etsy store remained one of my favorites and today, while looking for creative decoration ideas, I stumbled upon these lovely earrings, that I imagine using not only in my ears but also with other decorative purposes...

Tamar Schechner has a design and decoration firm in Vermont and besides that, she also creates these beauties and writes on her blog, which is worth visiting.

Well, what do you think? Where else can I use these acessories?

A Tough Nut to Crack

When I brought home macadamias in the shell from the food swap yesterday I didn't realise how hard they would be to crack.  I usually eat them covered in chocolate or roasted and salted.  I don't think I've ever eaten them straight from the shell.

Fortunately, we have sons who were very happy to whack the macadamias with a hammer - they're happy to hit anything with a hammer.

Afterwards, the nuts were guzzled down with great haste, especially by my husband whose favourite nuts they are.  And I am on the look out for a grafted macadamia tree, now I know that they will grow in Adelaide.  I have no idea where I would put a macadamia tree, but I'm sure somewhere can be found!

Essential Edibles Food Swap October 2010

Today I joined in the second Essential Edibles food swap.

Organised by Sustainable Communities SA, the idea of the food swap is that people bring along home-grown produce, preserves, seeds and seedlings and swap them.  No money changes hands and nothing is measured; you simply take away what you need and benefit from the expertise of other local growers.

I contributed lavender, some sweet orange jam (recipe here) made from home-grown oranges, Italian parsley, rosemary and cos lettuces.

Although it is still fairly early in the growing season, an impressive range of produce was on display.  There were home-grown macadamias (I didn't know macadamias even grew this far south!), lettuces, kale, silverbeet, lemons, grapefruit, herbs, bay leaves, snow peas, and lots of vegetable and flower seedlings.  I came home filled with inspiration and happy with the things I had received, which included some slivers of Jerusalem artichoke which I have planted although I have never eaten them in my life!
The Essential Edibles food swap takes place on the first Sunday of each month from 8.30 am at the Joslin Reserve, 3rd Avenue, Joslin in Adelaide.

Celebrate good times come on!

E se for prolongado, ainda melhor!

Hi everyone! Hope you are having a wonderful Saturday! Today I'm showing you some pictures of the things I have been gathering for my birthday party. There's still a long way to go and I haven't been feeling really motivated... maybe it's because of the arrival of Autumn or maybe it's just because I'm turning 40! :-)

The grapes and leaves are sugar cubes. I find them lovely!

Well, I look forward to hearing your suggestions and I wish you all an excellent weekend!

Purple Flowers

Over the past couple of days, I have been given purple flowers:
freesias,

and a lavender posy,

and striking irises.

Thank you everyone!

(It's my birthday today, and even though I decided last year that I had had quite enough birthdays, this one came hurtling along, anyway.)

And thank you Lisa, Sarah, Chris, Carly, Lindy, Kim and Jill (and all your children), for sharing morning tea with me yesterday!
